04 Apr 2010 Catch up.

We just finished a very lean week - or should I say a meat free week? Any way, due to bills and bank we didn't have enough money to buy meat so I had to get creative with stock and potatoes, and regardless to popular belief, a meat free diet does not make you lose weight. At least, not in the space of a week. . .
Thursday was pay day, therefore shopping day, and I made three car trips - one from Mannies, the $2 shop (which is not its real name, just what we call it as it describes it rather well :) ) bread shop, and the poultry shop in that complex, one from Aldi, and one from Mid Valley, so now our cupboards and freezers are fit to bust! It is a great temptation to eat as much as possible now to make the cupboards close nicely again, but this would not be wise me thinks!
I was thinking just the other day that I should leave a couple of pods
on the get seeds from the beans . . . I must remember to do so! I bought some chives (which have gone in around my guava bush) some celery seedlings and some purple cabbage seedlings, and while I was planting the latter two I discovered that my garlic is coming up again, and so is the leeks, and potatoes, while the poor capsicum have been attacked by the snails again (!!!!!!!). I have since layed down snail bait, so instead of just nibbled plants in the garden, I now have nibbled plants and piles of snail shells as well! Speaking of snail shells, in early summer I did this, and there were the same mounds of shells, and I accidentally stepped on some, and the most putrid smell erupted from the crushed remains - they had not in fact all shrivelled away as they are wont to do when poisoned, but had gotten infested with maggots, and it STUNK!!! I did not know this could happen till that point. Disgusting, but interesting, yes? My citrus trees are making a valiant effort to grow, and I'm hoping they are successful, as I would love to harvest my own citrus, and I want the stone fruit to do better next year too! Prayerful, and fingers crossed on this point (the former necessary, the latter not so
much but it looks impressive written down! har. har.
This morning was not the best one I've ever had in my life before. Thelesson was awesome! Possible one of the best we've ever had, but we were late because Michael and I had words, and it was rather unpleasant (over a silly miscommunication I might add!!) which nearly resulted in us not making it at all because Michael went all anti social, but go we did and I'm very thankful for it!! But that resulted in us leaving abruptly, and Michael slept from about one thirty till five, and was still weird when he got up. But I think we have reached an understanding of what happened and why between us, so hopefully it won't happen again (or if it does it'll be about something different!).
Tomorrow, if the weather is fine, I will be changing all linen (bed, kitchen, bath, laundry and toilet, possibly the lounge room also, but we'll see . . .) and Michael will start on the deck extension! Yay! Can't wait! We've had the plan of lengthening the deck ever since the extension was finished, but nothings been done about it till now.
Hope every one had an awesome Easter! Much love and best wishes to all!
Yes, vegitarian dishes can be scrummy, but the problem is the imagination can be a wee bit fiddly after a while, and its SUCH a RELIEF to be able to just chuck the meat and taters into the electric frying pan, and walk away!!!!!!!
salt is very effective on snails, and if your a cruel heartless person you can hold the beggars upside down and sprinkle it on them and then watch as they spit up and die (please note I don't have the stomach for this type of  entertainment, but I have a lot of brothers!!), but salt is no good for plants, and mine grow pretty close together, so I cannot use this method, but thankyou for this, as I had forgotten about it, and can suggest it to a friend of mine, who is also having  snail issues, but has fewer plants.
Another thing that can be used is curry powder! Once again, though, it can be bad for the plants when used in large quantities, so I cannot use this one either, but it is another interesting thing to file away in the old memory  bank, eh?
Our back yard it the breaking ground for all the snails in the neighbourhood, (I think because we have a large section of it devoted to natives, and so its all tree-ee and grass-y, and I tell ya, when it rains the snails come out so thick you cannot see the grass in our back yard!!! How do you cope with your snails?
